Waymarking “A scavenger hunt for unique and interesting locations”
Waymarking.com is an online site that provides tools for people to catalog, mark and visit interesting and useful locations around the world. The slogan of the company behind the site, Groundspeak, is “The Language of Location.”
Getting people excited about the process of their journeys has potentially positive implications for how we travel: a relationship with the places we visit and with that relationship comes a respect for the partner. So in that interdependence, comes healthier and greener choices about fuel consumption, means of travel and energy efficiency. But of course, plugging good old mother nature is another benefit of using the site. Above you see a wayfarer posing with an ancient bristlecone pine which may just be the oldest tree on Earth.
What is waymarking?
Waymarking is a way to mark unique locations on the planet and give them a voice. While GPS technology allows us to pinpoint any location on the planet, mark the location, and share it with others, Waymarking is the toolset for categorizing and adding unique information for that location.
What is a waymark?
A waymark is a physical location on the planet marked by coordinates (latitude/longitude) and contains unique information defined within its waymark category. An outdoor maze waymark category, for example, could contain information like price of admission and days of operation, while a blogger waymark category may contain an option for the type of blog.
