Vice President Al Gore welcomed Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew during his official visit to the United States in 1997 and hosted His All Holiness at the Vice Presidential Residence. During his welcome, Vice President Al Gore praised His All Holiness for his environmental work and referred to him as the “Green Patriarch.” In addition to the Patriarch’s work in the name of environmental issues, the Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates September 1 as the day of the environment. In the video, Vice President Gore notes that Patriarch Bartholomew was singled out by President Clinton as a motivational model while making his speech on Global Warming and Climate Change on October 22, 1997 (read the full text here).
