Architect and designer William McDonough asks what our buildings and products would look like if designers took into account “All children, all species, for all time.”

This ReelCycle excerpt takes us from 22 minutes to a 3 minute sample of William McDonough’s presentation at the 2005 TED Talks. We begin with McDonough screening an animated slide presentation someone sent to him which uses audio from the six-hour dialogue between National Public Radio (NPR) and McDonough; the selection is one very very very long sentence McDonough apparently dashed off the top of his head, although until he mentions it one would only notice the power and grace of the distillation of his thought. The clip then segues into how we can get to defining and expressing an actionable goal to take on the challenges of the environmental crisis and achieve solutions. What emerges is a tough tenderness for the ages:
How do we love all the children of all species for all time?
I cannot recommend strongly enough viewing the entire 22-minute video — sit down with your susty someone and your homo sapiens sapiens offspring and be inspired.
