First Family To Plant White House Veggie Garden
The April issue of Oprah’s O Magazine hitting news stands today features a cover-story interview with Michelle Obama in which she gives it up about plans for the new White House garden. But will this victory for victory garden advocates be organic?
First blogged by food writer Eddie Gehman Kohan, The First Lady, now First Locavore, shares with Oprah:
Michelle Obama: We’re also working on a wonderful new garden project.
Oprah: Will kids get to visit the garden?
Michelle Obama: We want to use it as a point of education, to talk about health and how delicious it is to eat fresh food, and how you can take that food and make it part of a healthy diet. You know, the tomato that’s from your garden tastes very different from one that isn’t. And peas – what is it like to eat peas in season? So we want the White House to be a place of education and awareness. And hopefully kids will be interested because there are kids living here. (p. 146)
As ABC News notes, President Obama’s latest shovel-ready project is an effort to promote healthy eating, but no clear word yet as to whether or not the wishes of hardcore food and sustainable agriculture advocates will come to fruition in theform of organically grown local produce. Hey, bottom line is woot-woot!
