A 47-million-year-old fossil that scientists say is very likely an ancestor of human beings was unveiled at the American Museum of Natural History with Mayor Michael Bloomberg in attendance. The animal had opposable thumbs like humans and fingernails instead of claws providing a possible transition to humans to the great consternation of creationist Stephen Colbert.
The fossil was discovered near Frankfurt in 1983 but was in the hands of private collectors until recently.
Dubbed ‘Ida’, the creature is believed to be a transitional species, living when the primate lineage split into two groups, one of which produced humans and monkeys, and the other gave rise to other primates such as lemurs.
Good write up at Sky News: Scientists Unveil Missing Link In Evolution and nifty interactive graphic of Ida the missing link fossil here.
