One of the 127 PlaNYC initiatives, MillionTreesNYC is a citywide, program integrated between the public and private sectors with the goal of planting one million new trees across New YorkCity’s five boroughs over the next decade. By planting one million trees, New York City can increase its urban forest, by 20%, while achieving many quality-of-life benefits that come with this simple horticultural act.
Parks (street trees) 220,000
Parks (reforestation), other agencies, and zoning regulations 380,000
Private Partners 400,000
Grand Total 1 Million New Trees (WOOT-WOOT!)
Launched by the Parks Department and New York Restoration Project, MillionTreesNYC is a collaboration of many partners, including:
Community-based and non-profit groups
City, state, and federal agencies
Corporations and small businesses
Developers, architects, and landscape architects
Private-property owners, and All New Yorkers
Planting trees is one of the most beneficial and cost-effective ways to help cities. Trees clean our air as well as reduce the pollutants that trigger asthma attacks and exacerbate other respiratory diseases. Trees cool our streets, sidewalks, and homes on hot summer days. Trees increase property value, and encourage neighborhood revitalization. And trees make our City an even more beautiful and comfortable place to live, work, and visit.
The City of New York intends to plant 60% of trees in parks and other public spaces. The other 40% will come from private organizations, homeowners, and community organizations.
MillionTreesNYC – A Call to Action!
MillionTreesNYC is more than planting trees—it’s a movement! Every New Yorker can participate in MillionTreesNYC, from homeowners and property managers, to schools and community groups, to block associations and small business owners. MillionTreesNYC empowers New Yorkers—just like you—to plant and care for trees through Citywide planting and stewardship programs, including:
- Volunteer planting and tree care outings
- Educational training and workshops
- Arbor Day events
No matter how you participate, you will be planting a legacy when you plant a tree – an extraordinary gift to New York City for generations to come.
Let’s get growing!
