The Isabel Toledo dress worn by Michelle Obama on Inauguration Day went on display yesterday at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology as part of a retrospective of designs by the Cuban-born designer.Our production company Big City Pictures shot an interview with Isabel Toledo and her artist/illustrator husband at the opening of their joint exhibition at Barneys New York.
The wife of President Barack Obama has won notoriety for her fashion style, and the color of the Toledo dress, a muted yellow “lemongrass,” sets it apart from most first ladies who largely wore red and blue at inaugurations. Says Toledo:
You don’t have to be a big corporation in America. Here I am. It’s the American dream.
That’s a sentiment that she and her husband artist and illustrator Rueben Toledo expressed to the Big City Pictures produced show Styleyes long before the Obama inaugural phenom took place.
Now a part of United States history, the Toledo ensemble is slated to become part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian.
While we’re glad to see Toledo’s exquisite work in-and-of-itself receive the recognition it deserves, and understand Obama’s selection of the designer to be a further expression of a cultural shift in the US which embraces diversity, we’re looking forward to both Toledo and First Ladies of all times adopting sustainable style: clothes and accessories that have been produced with solutions to their environmental impacts.
