NYT business section covers the dearth of females and preponderance of penis jokes in the writers rooms of the top late night comedy shows. Insights come from Lizz Winestead, comedienne and co-creator of the Daily Show for Comedy Central back in 1996, as well as from top women writers who have staffed the shows of Conan, Colbert and David Letterman.
In Summary:
- While more women make up the audience for late night comedy shows, there are still few women writers.
- More guys are in comedy so it is more difficult to find and hire women writers.
“It’s the law of averages,” Ms. Winstead said in a telephone interview. “More guys than women are in comedy.” When she and Ms. Smithberg sought submissions for writers on “The Daily Show,” more than 100 came in and “only about three or four were from women.”
- Comedy skews toward guy humor, but that’s not a problem for women to speak in the voice of male talent.
Ms. Winstead scoffed at the idea that a strong woman writer would be offended by the writers’ room. “I have no sensitivity to off-color humor,” she said. “I only have a sensitivity to bad humor.”
