Hear about the environmental topics to which Jack Johnson is most drawn to when you watch the Treehugger Hi Definition video.
::GREEN DEETS::
An Island to Oneself, Suvarov, Cook Islands:
This is the story of the years which I spent alone, in two spells on an uninhabited coral atoll half a mile long and three hundred yards wide in the South Pacific. It was two hundred miles from the nearest inhabited island, and I first arrived there on October 7, 1952 and remained alone (with only two yachts calling) until June 24, 1954, when I was taken off ill after a dramatic rescue. I was unable to return to the atoll until April 23, 1960 and this time I remained alone until December 27, 1963.

::TRANSCRIPT::
Jack Johnson: I like reading books about people who try to live on it. There’s a book called “An Island to Oneself” that I like a lot. And there are books like “Pitcairn’s Island” or any of those kinds of journeys where they had to figure out how to survive on their own without being connected to a civilization.
But the biodiesel I mean, that’s an interesting one too. It’s like, it’s an interesting time for those kinds of crops, for the kind of fuels that you can grow because it’s becoming more popular. There is that easy route of just the cheapest thing to grow, and like there are people who are bringing it in from across the world. And it’s like all of a sudden it’s not making sense to do it that way.
There is a great company in Hawaii called Pacific Biodiesel and it’s nice because they use all, at this point, it is all recycled. So they get from the restaurants and they convert it into biodiesel. So it’s nice using that in Hawaii. It makes a lot of sense because it’s actually processed; it’s made there in Hawaii. It’s from the recycled vegetable oil from the restaurants. But there is, you know, there is an alliance that started up just trying to kind of make sustainable biodiesel a reality. So hopefully that will be the case.
