As part of the NY400 celebration of Henry Hudson’s arrival in what would become New York City, a “Queen’s Day” bicycle event was held yesterday to introduce 200 Dutch-manufactured Batavus bikes in NYC. However, the event was overshadowed by the tragedy in the Netherlands wherein a car drove into a crowd welcoming the Dutch Royal Family in the town of Apeldoorn, killing seven people including the driver and injuring 12 others. Shortly thereafter, at the beginning of the bicycle event in New York City, Dutch Cabinet Minister Frans Timmermans acknowledged the disaster and led attendees in a moment of silence. While all other official Queen’s Day celebrations were cancelled in New York City and the rest of the USA, the press conference went ahead as planned as well as the bicycling event.
Cabinet Minister Timmermans presented the City of New York with a fleet of 200 NY400 bicycles for use throughout the city this year in an effort to promote bicycling. To echo the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival, the bikes symbolically arrived via the Hudson River on board a NYC WATER TAXI. The brash and bold orange bikes will be the icon of the NY400 celebrations this year.
This video covers much of the day including legendary New Yorker and rock singer Lou Reed coming along for the ride. Mostly in Dutch, but the Lou Reed song isn’t.
