The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) says that it is close to being able to produce a jet fuel from algae for the same cost as its fossil-fuel equivalent. Testing is to begin next year with production to come in 2013. This could be big news despite the problem faced by all biofuels that the need to grow a continual source crop with attendant associated costs and energy inputs may not prove to be as sustainable as true renewables such as solar and wind. That said, pushing jet fighters and commercial airplanes through the air is a tough nut to crack using electric batteries, thought perhaps not impossible some time in the future. So a cheap, low-carbon fuel would not only help the US military, the United State's single largest consumer of energy, wean itself off its dependance on oil both foreign and domestic, this new fuel could also lead to lower-carbon driving and flying for the rest of us.

Proposal Relies on Science Over Politics to Protect 3,000 Square Miles as Critical Habitat for Endangered White Whale

ANCHORAGE, AK – The federal National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) today took an important step toward protecting critical habitat under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) for the Cook Inlet beluga whale in Alaska by proposing to designate more than 3,000 square miles of the imperiled whale’s habitat for protection. The overdue proposal comes after a 2007 petition by various local and national groups to NMFS to list the beluga under the ESA, and on the heels of a formal notice of intent to sue by the Center for Biological Diversity.

Research reveals that logging is the largest single factor leading to tropical deforestation, as the cutting and road building associated with the timber industry opens avenues into rainforests. This initiates a chain of destruction that can include more logging, mining, slash-and-burn clearing for cattle grazing and conversion for chemical-intensive industrial agriculture. Most of the resultant products are exported to northern industrialized countries.
