Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the approved permit for Cape Wind Associates to build the 130-turbine farm in Nantucket Sound.

Cape Wind says it can generate power by 2012 and aims to eventually supply three-quarters of the power on Cape Cod to the approximately 225,000 residents while creating green jobs and tapping s domestic energy source. That the framework for how leases will be issued and revenue shared has nearby coastal states receiving 27.5 percent of the royalties generated from electricity production.
The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (Darpa) says that it is close to being able to produce a jet fuel from algae for the same cost as its fossil-fuel equivalent. Testing is to begin next year with production to come in 2013. This could be big news despite the problem faced by all biofuels that the need to grow a continual source crop with attendant associated costs and energy inputs may not prove to be as sustainable as true renewables such as solar and wind. That said, pushing jet fighters and commercial airplanes through the air is a tough nut to crack using electric batteries, thought perhaps not impossible some time in the future. So a cheap, low-carbon fuel would not only help the US military, the United State's single largest consumer of energy, wean itself off its dependance on oil both foreign and domestic, this new fuel could also lead to lower-carbon driving and flying for the rest of us.

The global water crisis trickles its way into the mainstream with University of Arizona professor Robert Glennon's interview with John Stewart on the Daily Show. The occasion is the release of Glennon's book Unquenchable: America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It. While Stewart sees the realities of our water sitch as a bit of a revelation, Glennon points out what many have known for a while: all of the water used in our homes is potable, but only ten percent is used for drinking and cooking. Just take a guess where the rest of it goes...

Google's new data center in Belgium has no chillers to support its cooling systems. The site Data Center Knowledge explains that the chillers used to refrigerate water to cool data centers require, unsurprisingly, a large amount of electricity to operate. The quest for cost-effective energy via efficiency has led to a practice known as “free cooling:” air from outside the data center is used when the temperature is cool, while falling back on chillers on warmer days. Google takes this strategy to the next level eliminating chillers altogether in its data center near Saint-Ghislain, Belgium. Bonus feature is an on-site water purification facility that allows it to use water from a nearby industrial canal rather than a municipal water utility. Google anticipates free cooling at the facility for about seven days per year, but what's really fascinating is what happens when the weather gets hot.

Apparently one of the dirty little secrets of fighting for a clean energy future (beginning right now, please : ) is that the pursuit can be downright fun. Although we couldn't make it to the State Department yesterday, the goings on in the photos sure do make us wish we could have stopped by, perhaps even with cool-o wind turbine effigy in hand. in addition to the good time had by the approx 150 people involved in the action, the organizers handed out quotes by people from around the world about their local green economy to Jonathan Pershing's (Deputy Special Envoy for Climate Change) assistant. Check out the pictures of generation green fighting the good fight for an environmentally just world.

The United States Interior Department just issued regulations governing offshore renewable energy projects that use wind, ocean currents and wave power for producing electricity. The offshore leasing rules for electricity production had stalled for two years over of a turf dispute as it were between governmental agencies, but that bottleneck has been broken. Advocacy organizations Clean Power Now and TheClean hail the Obama administration move as the biggest federal step forward for clean energy to date. But what about that nagging Cape Wind controversy? Details of the new rules of the water when you dive below.

THE PRESIDENT: Today, America produces less than 3 percent of our electricity through renewable sources like wind and solar -- less than 3 percent. Now, in comparison, Denmark produces almost 20 percent of their electricity through wind power. We pioneered solar technology, but we've fallen behind countries like Germany and Japan in generating it, even though we've got more sun than either country. I don't accept this is the way it has to be. When it comes to renewable energy, I don't think we should be followers, I think it's time for us to lead. (Applause.)
