The Blue Green Alliance is a national partnership of labor unions and environmental organizations dedicated to expanding the green economy through global warming solutions and advancing workers’ rights around the world. Launched in 2006 by the United Steelworkers and the Sierra Club — North America’s largest manufacturing union and the nation’s oldest environmental organization, respectively — this unique labor-environmental collaboration has grown to include the Communications Workers of America (CWA), the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA). The Blue Green Alliance unites more than six million people in pursuit of good jobs, a clean environment and a green economy.
The U.S. can create two million jobs and reduce the unemployment rate to 4.4 percent over two years by investing in the green economy. The report, released by the Center for American Progress and authored by the PERI at UMass, outlined a green recovery program investing in six global-warming solutions.
Read the report and read job-creation numbers for 34 states. Read a press release on the report from the Blue Green Alliance.
BlueGreen Alliance Approach
The Blue Green Alliance is a strategic national partnership between labor unions (the “blue” in “blue-collar”) and environmental organizations (the “green”) working to expand the green economy and advance the rights of workers around the world.
Specifically, the Blue Green Alliance is working to educate the public about solutions that:
-
Reduce global warming in the timeframe necessary to avoid the effects of climate change;
-
Restore the rights of workers to form a union and bargain collectively;
-
Achieve enforceable labor, environmental and human rights standards in trade policies; and
-
Curb the use of toxic chemicals in order to enhance public health and promote safer alternatives.
To achieve these goals, the Alliance programs include:
- the Good Jobs, Green Jobs National Conference;
- the Green Jobs for America campaign, including additional partners such as Working America, the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, Green For All, and the Center for American Progress;
- the Labor-Climate Project, a partnership with Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection and other partners to educate union members about the impacts of global warming; and
- groundbreaking research reports focused in renewable energy and green chemistry.
