It takes someone with a big personality to make big things happen, and that Bette Midler has and has done.
Best known as an entertainer and for her hit song The Rose 
, (watch video of Bette Midler belting out signature tune The Rose live here), she’s taken those botanical leanings to their logical conclusion: why just sing about Roses when you can plant them! Roses and everything else good, green and growing specifically in urban settings that are in need of a facelift. in 1995, Bette Midler founded the New York Restoration Project dedicated to the “conservancy of forgotten places.” The organization has raised over $38 million dollars for the restoration and development of under-resourced parks, community gardens, and open space in economically disadvantaged communities throughout New York City. It also spearheads the Million Trees NYC Project in concert with plaNYC. Seems to us it takes someone with this kind of ‘tude and hudspah to beautify New York City, — from Bette Midler’s web site:
