Anthony Weiner Does the Right Thing: Fiery Speech After Defeat of 911 Bill for Sick Rescue Workers (Video)

WATCH video of Congressman Anthony Weiner’s fiery speech

We bring you video of Brooklyn boy Representative Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y) who did the right thing making a fiery speech after House Republicans wrangled enough votes late last night to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to the rescue workers made ill by toxins from the attacks of September 11, 2001. HufPo’s Sam Stein calls it “a veritable YouTube moment” for Weiner whose district includes many of the affected. If so, this is just the kind of viral video you want to have on your resume: polar opposite from the Washington column. We applaud Weiner for insisting that elected officials stand behind their votes, be they yes or no, rather than casting them as part of machinations to protect their individual political interests and their colleagues. The crux of the 911 bill’s defeat lay on the grounds of rejecting a procedural maneuver and Weiner in the video angrily denounces those in the House, with a glancing rebuke to members of the Senate as well, who rather than casting a no vote on substance hid cowardly behind a technical excuse. Thank you, Congressman Weiner, for reminding us what it means to do the right thing: speak up for what you believe in.
