Opens in New York City on Friday July 18, Angelika Film center.
A Man Named Pearl is an inspiring story of Pearl Fryar, a self-taught topiary artist living in Bishopville, South Carolina, whose unlikely journey to national prominence began with a bigoted remark that inspired him to create a message of peace and goodwill through his garden sculptures. Pearl and his gardens have been featured in The New York Times and Smithsonian, and on NPR and CBS Sunday Morning. Says Fryar:
There’s always gonna be obstacles. The thing is, you don’t let those obstacles determine where you go.
Garden Rant has a nice write up from the Washington premiere of A Man Named Pearl:
Fryar IS lovable and admirable for working hard, loving his wife, inspiring children, and wowing middle-aged women of all races with his hot body. (For real – I agree totally with the tourist who blushingly confessed that she sure liked watching him move. Trim and muscular at 66, Fryar scrambles up ladders and wields his electric hedgers with amazing agility.)
And he created a big topiary sign across the front of his garden that reads “Love, Peace, and Goodwill.” Amen to that.
A Man Named Pearl film credits:
Directors: Brent Pierson, Scott Galloway
