1Sky: Organizing to Fight Global Warming and Build Green the New Green Economy

Created in 2007, 1Sky’s goal is to build a diverse, society-wide mobilization that will convince the federal government of the United States to chart a new direction by 2010—away from the catastrophes of global warming and toward a new era of economic prosperity. To identify the steps that leaders need to take in order to shift the nation away from global warming and toward the prosperity of a green economy, 1Sky has engaged a network of leading scientists and economists to create a comprehensive policy platform called 1Sky Solutions.

MOBILIZE AMERICA FOR SOLUTIONS: Create 5 million new jobs with a sweeping national mobilization for climate solutions, energy independence, and investment in a new energy economy. Conserve 20% of our energy by 2015. Invest in efficiency and a Clean Energy Corps, and challenge all sectors of society to save energy immediately.

SECURE OUR FUTURE: Do what science says is necessary: reduce global warming pollution at least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020.  Get on a realistic path to the reductions needed to prevent dangerous climate disruption: at least 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.  Design our climate policy to support and reward accelerated public and private investment in solutions.

TRANSFORM OUR ENERGY PRIORITIES: End development of new coal plants that emit global warming pollution.  Pivot boldly away from fossil fuel dependence, and toward a clean energy future with strong standards and incentives for energy efficiency and renewable energy.

• CREATE 5 MILLION GREEN JOBS in order to conserve 20% of our energy by 2015.
• FREEZE CLIMATE POLLUTION levels now, then cut by at least 25% below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% by 2050.
• NO NEW COAL PLANTS that emit global warming pollution; invest in renewable energy.

The organization grounds its 1Sky Solutions in scientific necessity, or the bottom line of what’s needed to dramatically reduce carbon emissions while maximizing energy efficiency, renewable energy and breakthrough technologies. By leveraging the economic promise of pivoting to a clean energy economy, 1Sky seeks to relieve U.S. dependence on foreign oil, unlock the potential of sustainable industry and usher in a new era of prosperity and green jobs.

Members build support for the 1Sky Solutions in key Congressional districts on a non-partisan basis, using cutting-edge communications, Internet and old-fashioned neighbor-to-neighbor outreach.  To create momentum, the 1Sky organization is acting in collaboration with hundreds of national environmental groups, state and local organizations, business, religious, health, social justice and military leaders, scientists, economists, elected officials, donors, celebrities and citizens nationwide. Phew, that’s a mouthful!  But hard to ignore — hey, Washington, are you listening yet?
